January 2003
Dear Friend
Welcome to the Princess Royal Trust for Carers
January Newsletter
My apologies for the late delivery of the
newsletter this month.
New Chat Room
We have only one chat room now, which seems the
best for most people. If you have trouble accessing it, the Chat Room
entry page gives some advice. If you are still having trouble let me
know - my email address is at the bottom of this newsletter.

New Ideas for 2003
From reading to running, music to Medau we have
ideas on different things for you to try this year. We have tried to
include a wide variety of new ideas, but if we have missed one off that
you are particularly interested in, please let me know and I will try to
find out about it. My email address is at the bottom.

What has the Trust been up to?
Who wants to be a millionaire?
As you may know Melanie Sykes appeared with Des
O'Connor on Celebrity Who wants to be a Millionaire on Christmas Eve.
Melanie kindly chose The Princess Royal Trust for Carers as her charity,
and our share came to £8,000.

Radio 5 Live
The Princess Royal Trust for Carers recently
worked with James Silver from BBC Radio 5 Live to put together a
documentary on Young Carers. James spoke to three young carers and Jade
Goody, from Big Brother 3, who was a young carer for her Mum.

Recipes Competition
A huge thank you to everyone who sent in recipes,
they all looked really great. The winner has been chosen, and their new
gourmet cookbook is on its way.
Coming up
Throughout February and March we will be
highlighting the problems carers face with their relationships when
caring for their spouse or partner. This will be running on the website
and the press.
Woman's Own would like to run this but need three
carers all women (sorry all you men out there) to talk about their
experiences and be photographed with your partners. If you would like to
know more about this, or would like to put your story forward, please
could you email me at the address below by Wednesday 15th January.
Some other interesting information for carers
Medication Review
Correct medication is central to the lives of many
carers and those they care for. The Older People's NSF Medication review
milestone states "All people over 75 should normally have their
medicines reviewed at least annually and those taking four or more
medicines should have a review 6-monthly". The Medicines
Partnership Task Force is a 2-year initiative supported by the DOH. They
have published a guide to medication review "Room for Review".
They can be contacted at 1, Lambeth High Street, London SE1 7JN. Tel.
0207 572 2474. Or on www.medicines-partnership.org.
Accessible Property
The Accessible Property Register exists to put
those with accessible homes to sell or rent in touch with those seeking
accessible property. Although this is a commercial business, the
promoters have pledged to use up to 50% of profits to support
initiatives aimed at reducing barriers for older and disabled people in
relation to housing and in extending access to electronic media. You can
visit their website on www.accessible-property.org.uk.
Holidays for people with dementia
The Alzheimer's Society has once again arranged
and subsidised special weeks for people with dementia and their carers
at Winged Fellowship holiday sites. These are based in Essex, Cornwall,
Southport, Nottingham and Southampton. Dates start in April 2003 and run
to February 2004 (mostly winter weeks). The holidays are very popular so
phone early to avoid disappointment! Winged Fellowship 0845 345 1970.
Best regards
