Headway's website
has a comprehensive description of the various types of head injury and what
effects these may have on the brain and its functioning. For local support,
contact Headway Highland's helpline
number.
Unfortunately head injury is very common. In this country about 20 people are
admitted to hospital with a head injury every hour. Most of these people have a
mild head injury from which they will make a very good recovery in a matter of
hours or a few days.
About 10% of people with head injuries have more severe problems that may
require many weeks and months in hospital and a very long period of
rehabilitation. The team involved in rehabilitation include
- Physiotherapist – helps people to regain the use of muscles and joints
to enable balance and movement
- Occupational therapist – concerned with developing independence in
activities of daily living, such as dressing, washing and cooking
- Speech and Language Therapist – specialises in helping people to
communicate more effectively; they can also assist with swallowing
techniques
- Dietician – advises on appropriate diet
- Social Worker – provides practical help with benefits, housing and
transport, as well as emotional support
